Bose: the company that has turned silence into technology since 1964

Founded in 1964 by Dr Amar Bose, the brand has put acoustics to work in aviation, the military, cars and the living room.

  1. That year, Dr Amar Bose founded the company that would carry his name. Wireless headphones and connected soundbars were still a long way off: the playing field was acoustics, a science few manufacturers took as seriously back then. Six decades on, that same obsession with sound still shapes the brand’s range, from earbuds to systems built into cars.

One company, one man, one idea

Bose was born from a conviction: sound is not a simple technical add-on, but an experience in its own right. That idea is what pushed Dr Amar Bose to build his own company rather than carry on elsewhere. Since then, the company has built its reputation on a string of innovations rather than a single flagship product, tackling technical problems others left aside, such as ambient noise and sound quality inside a car cabin.

Headphones, speakers, soundbars and cars

The current range spans several product families: headphones, earbuds, speakers, soundbars and car audio systems. This range reflects a single technical approach applied to very different uses, from the living room to the car cabin, by way of personal listening on the move. The brand has never confined itself to a single corner of the audio market, choosing instead to apply its acoustic know-how to everyday objects as well as equipment fitted directly on the production line of vehicles.

Silence as a field of research

Bose states that the brand pioneered noise reduction for the military, aviation and millions of consumers. This places the origins of noise-reduction technology well before it became commonplace in consumer headphones: professional and military uses, where limiting ambient noise is not a comfort but an operational necessity, came first, before the same technology found its way into everyday earbuds and headphones.

First in the car

Bose also states that it launched the first premium audio systems factory-fitted in cars. This places the brand at the origin of a segment that is now commonplace: high-end audio equipment built in directly by carmakers, rather than added afterwards by vehicle owners. It is a way of bringing carefully engineered acoustics into an object that was not originally designed with sound in mind.

Sound as a force

Beyond its products, Bose states that sound is one of the most powerful forces on earth. That statement sums up the philosophy that has run through the company since its founding: sound is not simply a signal to be faithfully reproduced, but something capable of shaping an experience, a mood, a perception. That conviction is what has led the brand to work as much on musical reproduction as on the absence of noise — two sides of the same work on acoustics.

Why we like it

We like this simple idea running through the whole of the brand's history: sound deserves as much attention as image or comfort. A company born from a single man, Dr Amar Bose, that became a reference across fields as different as aviation, cars and the living room, which is why we're covering it.

Exactly the kind of brand we’d love to come across on O!deal one day.
