What it is

The All season down duvet is Tekla’s down duvet, from a brand based in Copenhagen. It belongs to a family of three duvets: the brand offers the same type of product in three levels of warmth, Light, All-season and Extra-warm, and presents this one as the duvet for the whole year. It is made in Denmark, filled with European goose down, and its cover is organic cotton.

It comes in twelve sizes, from 140 × 200 cm to 270 × 235 cm. Corner ties hold a duvet cover in place, and an organic cotton storage bag is among the details the brand announces.

Why it exists

Tekla says it was born in 2017 as an antidote to the bedding of the day: plain sets, busy patterns or quality that did not last. The down collection carries that idea forward: the brand has published a guide explaining what makes a good duvet, and chooses to spell it out in detail.

Its reasoning comes down to three points. First, down is a three-dimensional structure made of thousands of fine filaments that trap air; a feather, flat and with a rigid quill, insulates less and weighs more. Tekla duvets are therefore filled with goose down, with no feathers. Second, because geese are larger, their down clusters are too, which gives, according to the brand, a higher fill power than duck. Finally, the brand sets TOG aside, since it measures the heat retained but neither weight nor quality: two duvets with the same TOG can be very different, one light and airy, the other heavy and bulky. It therefore measures its duvets by fill power.

What matters

Fill power: 800 for all the brand’s duvets. It is measured by letting the down expand in a chamber, then placing a weighted disc on top, close in weight to a duvet with its cover; the space the down keeps under compression gives the figure, which runs from 400 to over 800. According to the brand, the higher it is, the more the duvet insulates for less weight.

The baffles. The All-season and Extra-warm versions are built with small walls of fabric inside, which let the down expand in every direction and, according to the brand, avoid cold spots. The Light version is quilted straight through instead: the down flattens along the seams and lets heat through, deliberately. Box stitching holds the down in place.

The cover. It is organic cotton, in a tight batiste-type weave, to stop the down from escaping.

The down itself. According to the brand, the suppliers are members of the European Down and Feather Association, and comply with European regulations on animal husbandry. The brand also cites the labels Downafresh, for down washed and dried at a high temperature, Nomite, for a fabric woven tightly enough to hold back dust mites, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Day to day

The brand sets out how to care for a down duvet. Shake it out after use; air it four times a year; wash it twice a year or as needed. Before washing, shake it out well, then run it on a delicate cycle at 60 °C, with a mild detergent and no bleach. Fabric softener is ruled out, because it coats the down and damages it.

For drying, the brand advises a tumble dryer at a low temperature, with dryer balls to spread the down, then air drying in a warm, dry place. The down must never be stored or used damp. Stains are treated on the spot, as early as possible. An organic cotton storage bag is provided for the periods when the duvet is not in use.

What the brand says

Tekla presents this duvet as breathable, insulating and versatile, and states that the baffle construction lets the down spread out fully, for steady warmth all year round. It states that every batch of down is checked in the factory laboratory, that the down is washed, sorted and filled into covers, and that every piece is sewn and labelled by hand. According to the brand, its pieces are designed to last.

Why it caught our eye

We spotted it for its precisely explained construction: goose down checked batch by batch, internal baffles, an organic cotton cover. We also like the plainness of the object, a simple white with a plain cream ribbon, and the care given to maintenance.

Exactly the kind of brand we’d love to come across on O!deal one day.
