Duralex: the French tempered glass now owned by its own workforce
Founded in 1945 in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, Duralex still makes its tempered glass on that same site. Since 2024, the company has been majority-owned by the people who run it.

- France is emerging from the war, and everything needs rebuilding: homes, canteens, cafés. This is the context in which Duralex was born, in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin. The brand has never left its original factory since. Nearly eighty years later, in 2024, the story takes a new turn: the company becomes a cooperative, majority-owned by its own employees.
One site, one glass, one idea
Duralex was built on a simple technical principle: tempered glass. A process that, according to the brand, makes glass up to 2.5 times stronger than ordinary glass. The company settled in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin and has never relocated its production. Since 1945, everything has been made there, glass after glass, service after service. The brand built its reputation on everyday objects: tumblers found as readily in school canteens as on café tables, in France and beyond.
What Duralex makes
The range is built around tableware and tempered glassware. The brand’s tumblers and bowls are designed to be stackable, a choice suited to storage and to institutional or professional use. The Ovenchef range, meanwhile, is aimed at the kitchen: these pieces withstand temperatures up to 200°C, making them suitable for both cooking and serving at the table. Duralex also offers a laser-engraving personalisation service on its glassware, opening the door to pieces marked with an initial, a pattern, or a keepsake.
Tempered glass, a craft rooted at home
Everything comes down to the material. Duralex’s tempered glass has been made since day one at the La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin factory, without interruption since 1945. This tempering process gives the glass properties the brand highlights: enhanced mechanical strength, but also a non-porous surface that, according to Duralex, prevents bacterial growth. A point that speaks directly to anyone looking for tableware that’s easy to maintain, whether in the kitchen or in shared settings. Another claim from the brand: should it break, tempered glass reportedly carries no risk of injury, unlike ordinary glass, which shatters into sharp shards. It’s this kind of technical detail that has built the brand’s reputation for durability, all without ever leaving its original production site.
A company owned by the people who run it
The standout event in Duralex’s recent history is its change of status. Since 1 August 2024, the company has operated as a worker cooperative (SCOP), a structure in which employees become the majority shareholders of their own workplace. In concrete terms, 144 employees, sixty per cent of the workforce, became employee-shareholders and took a stake in the company. It’s a rare governance choice for a brand founded in 1945. The new status changes nothing about production, still firmly rooted in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, but it redefines who decides, who invests, and who carries the brand’s future forward.
What’s just happened
The move to cooperative status, dated 1 August 2024, remains the most recent and most significant event in Duralex’s history. One hundred and forty-four employees became shareholders, representing sixty per cent of the company’s workforce. For a brand known internationally, this kind of transition marks a rare moment in French industrial history: the company is now majority-owned by those who keep it running day to day.
A brand present well beyond France
Duralex says it is present in more than a hundred countries, pointing to a well-established international distribution network for a brand that has remained loyal to a single manufacturing site in France. Every glass carries the same origin, wherever in the world it’s found: La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, without interruption since 1945.
Why we like it
We love this simple idea: tumblers that stack, endure, and get passed on. We also love that a company founded in 1945 now belongs to the people who keep it running, day after day, in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin.
Exactly the kind of brand we’d love to come across on O!deal one day.
